ディープ・パープルのアルバム『マシン・ヘッド』の製作直前、スタジオとして使用する予定であったスイス・モントルーにあるカジノで行われたフランク・ザッパのコンサートで実際に起きた火事を題材にして作られたものであり、歌詞の内容は事件の経過をそのまま書き綴ったものとなっている。
このカジノの片隅にはステージがあり、ライン直結で録音できる設備が備わっていた。録音スタジオは、カジノのワイン置き場として作られた空間だったという。レッド・ツェッペリン、デヴィッド・ボウイ、クイーンなどが録音に使ったことでも有名で、クイーンのアルバム『ジャズ』の内ジャケットの写真がそのカジノステージである。
また、クイーンがその後このスタジオを買い取った。スタジオの名前は「Mountain Studios」で、今ではスタジオの持ち主のエンジニアDavid Richardsが引っ越したためにこのカジノの一角はスタジオとしては使われていないが、入り口は存在している。また近隣の公園に、夜になるとライトアップするSMOKE ON THE WATERというライティングがある。
